Women urged to pay attention to their own health

On Women's Day this year, the Journey of Hope Team will send the women of South Africa a clear message about the importance of maintaining health and self-esteem to more effectively care for those close to them.

Many South African women are either solely responsible for the care of their families or live with the daily burden of mental and/or physical abuse, sometimes of both themselves and their children.  Early detection of breast cancer is a major determining factor in surviving the disease, and the facts are clear: early detection saves lives.  Unfortunately, women are often so busy caring for others – or have been psychologically and physically undermined to such a degree – that they may overlook or put off their own health-related concerns.

In order to spotlight the importance of early detection of breast cancer, the Journey of Hope Team will visit communities in outlying areas across the country.  In these more needy social strata, breast cancer symptoms may go ignored or unnoticed until too late for effective treatment.  Whilst breast cancer can affect anyone, regardless of race, age, creed or gender, women are statistically at higher risk.  The Journey of Hope team wants to reach out to women, informing them about the critical need for regular self-examination in a bid to detect breast cancer early.

On Women's Day, Tuesday 09 August, the Journey of Hope Survivors will set off on Honda motorcycles from the Viper Lounge, Marine Circle Drive, Table View and ride through to Kleinvlei Sports Field, Eerste River to engage with the local community.  At a fun-filled event which will include dancing, drum majorettes and music, the Journey of Hope riders will impart information to the public in an accessible, positive manner, sharing their own stories of hope, reinforcing the importance of self-examination, and debunking many myths surrounding breast cancer.  TV show host and media personality Faizal Sayed will also share some of his experiences being involved with Cancer related campaigns as part of his social responsibility portfolio. Festivities start at the sports field from 08:00 and will continue until 17:00.

The Journey of Hope invites local motorcyclists wishing to join the ride to Eerste River to meet at the Viper Lounge by 08:30 on Tuesday, 09 August.

For more information on the joining the motorcycle ride from The Viper Lounge, please contact Bronwyn Durham on 087 808 3750, or email bronwyn@viperlounge.co.za. Alternatively, please contact Charmaine Petersen on 079 733 2106 for more information on the activities taking place in Eerste River.
